Families of three students and the N-Double-A-C-P are suing the Pickens County School District for banning a library book about racism.

The lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in Anderson says the school district's decision to remove the book entitled "Stamped: Racism, Anti-racism and You" is unconstitutional.

The complaint by the six parents and the Pickens County Branch of the civil rights organization says the book was written especially for young readers and is a New York Times Number One Bestseller.

Its authors are Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds. Kendi, born Ibram Henry Rogers, founded and directs the Center for Antiracist Research in Boston. He wrote a column in 2003 saying whites are -- quoting -- "socialized to be aggressive people... They are raised to be racist."  Pickens County School officials have not commented on the lawsuit.
