A fatal shooting in Western North Carolina has led to the suspect pleading guilty to manslaughter charges. The Buncombe County District Attorney's Office says 63 year old, Randall Scott McCaul fatally shot Gregory Gaines in November of 2021.
McCaul was originally charged with 1st degree murder in the case, but agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter. The DA's office says Gaines confronted McCaul prior to the shooting and the use of excessive force is what led to charges being pursued.
McCaul is set to serve a minimum of 9 years and a maximum of just over 12 years.
