Few surprises in municipal elections

Spartanburg elects new mayor after incumbent declines to run for re-election

In the Greenville City Council races, Democrat Russell H Stall defeated Republican Joe Farmer with nearly 59% of the vote for the At Large seat. In District 2, Democrat Lillian Brock Flemming was unopposed as was Republican Will Brasington in the District 4 race. The GOP candidate for Commissioner of Public Works James Bannister defeated Democrat Matthew B Praytor with 57% of the vote.

Spartanburg voters chose Councilman Jerome Rice to be the next mayor of Spartanburg defeating former city attorney Cathy McCabe in Tuesday’s election.  Incumbent Mayor Junie White announced in June that he would not seek a fourth term.

Union County voters rejected referendums on a new penny sales tax and a change of the form of county government. The penny sales tax plan lost with over 51% of voters saying no to the local tax increase. The referendum that would have changed the county's government from council-supervisor to council-administrator form was also defeated with over 64% of voters saying no to the change.

In Georgetown voters elected the a Republican mayor and three Republican city council members for the first time in that city's history. Georgetown was incorporated in 1729.
