A Colombian national has been indicted by a federal grand jury, charged with laundering drug money through the Greenville area. FBI agents began investigating suspects believed to be involved in the international laundering of drug proceeds through the Upstate, in August of 2023.
Law enforcement identified several bank accounts associated with shell corporations that were receiving money from large scale drug sales. The group was then sending the proceeds to a single US-based cryptocurrency exchange for which 40-year-old, William Andres Holguin was the sole owner.
Approximately $135 million US dollars traveled through his account from March 2023 to May 2024. Holguin Mendez faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and is currently detained pending trial.
