As the new South Carolina legislative session gets underway, proposed casino gambling will be on the docket for lawmakers. Former State Representative Jonathan Hill was a guest on the Charlie James Show Tuesday afternoon to speak on the matter.
'Hill said " Whether you're coming at this from a social perspective that we shouldn't have gambling at all, or if you're coming at it from a free market perspective, that the government shouldn't decide what companies get to come here, the bill is just horrible any way you look at it".
Since leaving his position in the statehouse, Hill has been keeping a close eye what he describes as "bad bills". He explained why he feels the bill could be seen as government overreach.
Hill: " It's truly a South Carolina way to do it, to say we're going to have casinos and were going to create a new government agency to decide which casinos get to be here and basically create a total state run monopoly around it."
More than 40 states nationwide have some form of casinos, with many of them operating on tribal land, which are not governed by the state. Over 20 states have casinos that operate on non-tribal land and are under some sort of state governance.
