GCSO Deputy Walks Away After Driver Violates Move Over Law

Greenville County Deputy Walks Away After Driver Violates Move Over Law....

Deputy Theo King was struck from behind on I-85SB near mile marker 46 during the early morning hours of July 3, 2026.

He was providing backup as a tow truck operator loaded a disabled vehicle onto a rollback. His patrol car was stopped in the right lane with its blue lights flashing when another driver crashed into it. Deputy King described the moments before the collision during an interview on the Greenville County Sheriff's Office's "Roll Call" podcast:

"I'm sitting there in the car, just hanging out, and something told me I was like 'hey, you should, you should look up.' And I looked up, and not even a half a second, I saw headlights in my rearview. I felt the hit and then the next thing I knew I was looking at the side of the tow truck."

The crash is a reminder of South Carolina's Move Over Law. Drivers are required to move over for emergency and service vehicles stopped with flashing lights. If it's not safe to change lanes, they must slow down significantly.

Violating the Move Over Law is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of $300 to $500 and could also add points to your driving record.
