A Deputy in Georgia is dead, as is the suspect who reportedly ambushed him with gunfire during a weekend incident. The incident happened in Paulding County about 25 miles from Atlanta, just after 6PM Saturday evening.
A Deputy there responded to a domestic dispute at a home in Hiram. The Sheriff's Office says Deputy Brandon Cunningham arrived and the suspect fired on Deputy Cunningham as he exited his patrol vehicle. The suspect was then identified as 42 year old, James Samuel Atkins.
Investigators say that Atkins also shot his wife 52 year old, Kim Vu. She was injured and was transported to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition as of the time of this report. Gunfire from Atkins kept other Deputies from being able to render aid to Deputy Cunningham after he was shot.
Cunningham died at the scene, he was just 30 years old and was in his 4th year with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. Atkins was later found dead from what was behind to be self inflicted gunshot wound.
