Greenville Police report auto break-ins and auto thefts have increased significantly over the past month. Public Information Officer Sgt. Johnathan Bragg said police need the public’s help to lower those numbers. Compared to this time last year, auto break-ins are up 96%, and auto theft are up 19%.
In 75% of the auto break-in cases, the vehicles were unlocked, and in 22% of the auto theft cases, the vehicles were unlocked, and the keys were inside. Bragg reminds drivers to lock their cars, take their keys with them, and hide any valuables so that they are not visible to anyone looking in the vehicle.
Some of the “hotspots” for auto break-ins are apartment complexes around Haywood Mall, the Cleveland Park area, and the Green Avenue area. The “hotspots” for auto thefts include the apartment complexes on Haywood Road and apartment complexes on Century Drive, Century Circle, Villa Road, and Verdae Boulevard.
