The one percent sales tax increase on the ballot for Greenville County voters has been at the heart of controversy. County Councilman Benton Blount has been one of the outspoken critics opposed to the increase.
He joined the Tara Show Tuesday morning to talk about the issue. The 1 percent sales tax revenue would go to maintaining roads something that the gas tax already goes to and that the SCDOT is trailing on.
Blount said " The issue has never been about the money, it's been about a timeline and availability for SCDOT to line up paving".
Blount says much of the Gas Tax revenue goes to state roads that located in Greenville County and not the County roads something he has already brought up with officials.
"I asked in the very first meeting and the response was that people don't care whether it's state or county roads that get paved, as long as the roads get paved. I said, I don't think you know Greenville County residents".
Benton Blount was elected to represent District 19 in 2022. He was one of a minority of Council Members who have been openly opposed to the tax increase.
