On the agenda at the Greenville County Council meeting last (Tuesday) night was proposed tax breaks for automaker Volvo. The company is considering building a plant in the county and the fee in lieu of taxes or FILOT .Volvo is owned by a Chinese holding company and headquartered in Sweden.

That didn't sit well with area resident Ed Paxton, who spoke against the proposed tax incentives. He stated "Volvo is too close to communist China to suit me". He would go on to voice his displeasure with foreign investments moving into Greenville County and urged the council not to approve the FILOT.

The Council unanimously approved the tax breaks, the item will have to come back before council for a final reading. As part of the agreement, Volvo will be required to invest 35 million in the Greenville County economy over the next 5 years.
