Last week, WORD's Matthew Causey outlined the Upstate's growing issues with homelessness in a series on the subject. Relief could be coming on that front, as the Upstate's largest city looks at making affordable housing more prevalent.
A proposal to invest one million dollars in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan is in the works for the City Of Greenville. The investment would go toward building affordable rental units. The city still has to provide a general plan along with public feedback by the end of March.
At a meeting this past Tuesday, city staff provided an overview of the process and outlined the next steps. Their are restrictions on the federal funding, it can only be used in a few different ways.
That includes creating or preserving affordable housing, rental assistance and supportive services. The city is still gathering public feedback, a zoom meeting is scheduled for March 14th to collect input from residents.
