The top cop in the Upstate's largest city pushing his previously announced retirement back. Greenville Police Chief Howie Thompson was set to retire at the end of this week, but now has agreed to stay on.
Thompson was asked to stay in his role by newly hired City Manager Shannon Lavrin. She was named to the position officially on Monday and immediately requested that Thompson stay to help the city with the transition.
Lavrin said "I asked him to stay because he is a trusted advisor who will bring stability to the organization and our public safety leadership team as I transition into my new role."
There's been no timeline mentioned on hiw long Chief Thompson will put off his retirement.
