Filling a vacancy on the library board was a flashpoint over access to controversial lifestyle literature at Tuesday’s County Council session.

A County Council committee nominates library board members, which included Tiffany Santagati, a supporter of the LGBTQ community and advocate of access to library material about it, and Cicil Beckner.

Vice Chairwoman Liz Seman supported Santagati on the council’s nominating committee, and Becker’s name was proposed by members of council who are allowed to nominate additional candidates for the board.

Joe Russo expressed his opposition to material about sexuality and gender issues in the children’s area of the library in an email to fellow council members, and urged a vote against Santagati.

After a spirited face off with supporters of both candidates, the council ultimately voted in favor of Cecil Beckner for the board seat.

Councilman Benton Blount said he voted according to concerns from what he said were hundreds of constituents who had contacted him.

Lizman, who supported and originally nominated Santagati, said she hopes the process and this outcome won’t discourage people with diverse opinions and lifestyles from participating in local government.
