Main Street in West Pelzer is finally open again after being blocked much of the weekend by utility poles mowed down by a Hummer that kept going. Police are still looking for the Hummer.
The Hummer veered onto the shoulder, then the sidewalks of Main Street Saturday night bringing down at least five utility poles with a tangle of power lines, a transformer and a stretch of fiber-optic phone cable. Main Street is open again from Palmetto Road to Highway 20.
The area from Spring Street to Bollinger Street remained closed Monday morning. Mill Town place stayed open . and one entrance to the West Pelzer Baptist Church parking lot was clear for Easter Sunday services, along with the nearby Radiant Life and Living Water Churches.
Witnesses say a couple of people jumped out of the Hummer, briefly surveyed the devastation and ran, but the battered vehicle drove away. Chief Scott Stoller urges anyone who has any information about it to contact West Pelzer Police or the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.
