With nine candidates already in the special election race to take over for former Sheriff Chuck Wright, the Spartanburg County Council is cutting the salary in half.
State law requires the salary to be set before a sheriff is sworn in, so councilmembers gathered in a called session Wednesday night, to handle the matter.
They voted to establish the county's portion of the sheriff's salary at a $100,000 and the state kicks in fifteen more. At the time of his resignation, Chuck Wright's annual salary was $219,000.
