A man faces a possible life sentence on federal charges after the killing of a transgender woman in the LowCountry. Daqua Lameek Ritter was found guilty of a hate crime, weapons violation and obstruction of justice this past week.

The charges came after transgender woman identified as Dime Doe was found fatally shot in 2019. Court records say Ritter became enraged when his relationship with Doe was exposed in the community.

The trial went for four days before Ritter was found guilty. He faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison. His sentencing will be done at a later date. This marks the 1st ever hate crime conviction in a trial based on gender identity.
