Flags at the State Capitol in Columbia are flying at half staff today to honor the memory of a fallen police officer in the Midlands. Governor McMaster ordered the flags to be flown at half mast as a tribute to fallen Newberry Police Officer Lt. Michael Wood.
He was killed last week after his patrol car collided with with a transfer truck at an intersection in Newberry. Wood's family held a private viewing for him Sunday and his memory is being honored at a service at Newberry College today.
Wood had been with the Newberry PD for 20 years until his death. He rose through the ranks being promoted to Corporal in 2006, Sergeant in 2008 and Lieutenant in 2017.
