An Upstate landmark celebrated a milestone birthday this past weekend. A large crowd gathered Saturday at Duncan Park in Spartanburg to hold an event in honor of the park turning 100 years old.
The 3,000 seat ballpark has been the crown jewel of baseball stadiums in the Sparkle City since it opened in the 1920's. Over the years Duncan Park has had many highlight moments, including in 1937 when the New York Yankees played an exhibition game there that featured Joe Dimaggio and Lou Gehrig.
The Spartanburg Phillies called Duncan Park home from 1963 through 1994. Officials in Spartanburg say the park will be undergoing renovations, but there's no timeline on completion of the upgrades.
The future of the iconic ballpark seems to be uncertain with construction on a brand new ballpark in downtown Spartanburg expected to be completed by early 2025.
