A murder suspect is in custody after a fatal stabbing in Spartanburg County on Sunday.
Deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office were called to Williams Street in Spartanburg around 10:20 pm (last night) in relation to a stabbing. Upon arrival they found a male victim with numerous stab wounds. EMS took him to a hospital where he later passed away.
The suspect, previously identified by witnesses as 22-year-old Matthew Ryan Shope, came to the hospital for a cut on his hand. A bloody knife was found in his possession during a search.
After his injury was treated, law enforcement interviewed him, but he was uncooperative. He was taken to the detention facility and charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime. Motive is still unknown.
