The trial of a man accused of causing the death of a Greenville County Deputy who had stopped his car on I-85 might go to the jury Thursday. Wednesday's testimony included a replay of dashboard and body cam video. That evidence was intended to prove that Sheriff's Office Sergeant Conley Jumper's death on I-85 in October of 2020 was caused by Ray Kelly, the driver on trial for murder.
Kelly's public defender challenged a State Trooper's testimony that Jumper was fatally injured when an eighteen wheeler hit the defendant's car as he tried to drive away after fighting with deputies on the shoulder of the interstate near White Horse Road.
Jumper who was standing on the driver's side was dragged into the traffic lane, but Kelly's court-appointed lawyer Mindy Lipinski said, his Nissan was also struck by another deputy's car speeding to the scene at more than hundred miles an hour.
She told jurors the Highway Patrol investigation ignored data suggesting that collision might have been a fatal factor. SLED agents also testified that a search of Kelly's car turned up drugs, several thousand dollars in cash and a gun.
