Nearly 30 suspects have pleaded guilty after an investigation into a fraud scheme that was led by South Carolina prison inmates.
The U.S. Department Of Justice says inmates, their families and friends scammed victims and the government out of millions of dollars in Covid benefits.
The conspirators harvested personal data and used that info to apply for Covid unemployment benefits. The DOJ says the inmates led a scam that totaled over 5 million dollars.
The inmates were using contraband cell phones to orchestrate the scheme. 29 people have entered guilty pleas to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
