The Lowndes Hill Sidewalk Project will add nearly one mile of new sidewalks through the Overbrook community. At its first reading Oct. 13, City Council approved an appropriation of $1.358 million in federal grant funding for the project. The funds will be combined with $2 million from the City’s Neighborhood Infrastructure Bond (NIB), enabling construction of sidewalks along Lowndes Hill Road and a short section of Overbrook Road from East North Street to Keith Drive.
The total project budget is $3.4 million.
“It’s an investment in people,” said Councilman John DeWorken. “Sidewalks and high-visibility crossings provide families with safe passage to school, a friend’s house, the trail and businesses along Laurens Road.”
A portion of the project at the intersection of Lowndes Hill Dr and Hillside Dr has already been completed, creating ADA ramps, high visibility crosswalks and an enhancement to the four-way stop with a flashing beacon. When completed, the improvements will help the Overbrook neighborhood connect to the Swamp Rabbit Trail’s Green Line at Laurens Road.
The grant was approved by the Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS) as part the Transportation Alternatives Program under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration to support nonmotorized modes of transportation.
