A Nigerian man has been extradited to the U.S. after the death of a South Carolina teenager.
The U.S. Department of Justice says 24 year old, Abolore Lawal has been indicted in connection to a sextortion scheme that led to the suicide of 17 year old, Gavin Guffey of Rock Hill.
The DOJ says Lawal posed as a woman on social media and coerced Guffey into sending compromising photos. Lawal then extorted Guffey by threatening to leak the photos unless Guffey sent him money.
The indictment charges Lawal with fatal child exploitation, distributing child sex abuse material, coercion of a minor, fatal cyberstalking and intent to extort. Guffey was the son of State Representative of Brandon Guffey.
Following the younger Guffey's death, Brandon introduced a bill that was signed by Governor McMaster called "Gavin's Law". The law aims to protect minors and vulnerable adults by creating stiffer penalties for sextortion schemes that victimize them.
