The fight is ongoing in Oconee County, as a developer's plans have been rejected by the County Council. Developer Mark Hart, a former executive with the Carolina Panthers has proposed plans to build over 5,000 homes on a 600 acre plot in the Newry Community of Oconee County.
The County Council has voted against it, as the development would be in violation of the county's population density standards. The chief opposition has been Republican Councilman Matt Durham.
He cited in addition to the density standards issue, the area of Highway 130 and Old Clemson Highway (which is adjacent to Newry) would not be able to handle the influx of traffic.
Letters exchanged between Durham and Hart outline the developer's plan of action if the deal is not approved. The letter from Hart mentions a potential media campaign, which Durham characterized as "a smear campaign".
Hart's letter also mentioned litigation and possible political action. Durham described those as "threats". He responded on social media stating plainly "Oconee County will not bullied".
The stalemate on the issue continues, as the Council is standing firm on their position.
