Sunday marked one year since a Chinese spy balloon was shot down off of South Carolina's coast. The balloon entered U.S. airspace in late January of 2023 and was spotted flying over the Upstate along the way.
The balloon was taken down over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Myrtle Beach. The Chinese have insisted that it was a weather-data gathering civilian balloon and that it veered off course due to high winds.
Following the incident, U.S. Congressman from the Low Country Russell Fry introduced legislation to combat similar incidents in the future.
The bill calls on the Department Of Defense to submit a report on the capabilities of such aircrafts. The bill has since been referred to the House Armed Service Committee.
