Upstate man charged after stealing an ambulance and crashing it

An Upstate man is in custody after police say, he stole an ambulance and crashed it. Lt. Patrick Fortenberry of the Greer Police Department says officer responded to a report of suspicious behavior at a home on Tryon Street just before 11:30 AM Wednesday. Officers encountered a man naked under the house, they believe was on drugs.

The man, 35 year old Jamario Marquis Bowens of Greenville was treated by EMS after they were called in. EMS personnel got Bowens in the back of the ambulance and police left the scene. However, they were called back later after Bowens became combative with the EMS crew. In the chaos, Bowens got himself in the drivers seat and took off in the ambulance.


Officers were still in route back to the scene when Bowens fled. He was later spotted on South Buncombe Road and Hood Road. Officers were trying to catch up to Bowens, when he drove through a field and later hit a telephone poll.

Bowens was taken to the hospital to be treated after the single vehicle crash. He's charged with Carjacking, 1st Degree Assault, DUI and Resisting Arrest".
