Political leaders, school officials and community activists have all issued statements, following Thursday's tragic school shooting in Greenville, that killed 12 year old Jamari Jackson.
Greenville County School Board Chair Roger Meek said " The Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees extends our deepest sympathies and prayers to the family of the student who passed away in the shooting at Tanglewood Middle School. No child should lose their life in a needless tragedy like this, and no family should have to endure the pain of losing a child.While it appears that everyone responded appropriately and efficiently, every incident provides an opportunity for us to evaluate our emergency response plans and determine what works and what improvements can be made moving forward."
U.S. Senator Tim Scott tweeted about the tragic incident Thursday night saying " Hearing the heartbreaking news out of Greenville. Praying for the students at Tanglewood Middle School and the families affected." U.S. Congressman William Timmons also took to twitter Thursday to speak on the incident, his tweet is below.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office said Friday, that Jackson was pronounced dead just after 1 PM Thursday. The Coroner's report says Jackson died at Greenville Memorial from a gunshot wound to the chest.
In the wake of the tragedy, Upstate activist Traci Fant has been outspoken in wanting metal detectors in area schools. Fellow activist Bruce Wilson said in a video Friday morning it's too soon for that discussion. An audio excerpt from Wilson's video is below.
