In Richland County South Carolina, a couple was arrested Wednesday, charged with homicide by child abuse and two counts of neglect.
Sheriff Leon Lott said an investigation into Wilbur and Fifi-Hill Fields began Friday, February 16, 2024 after Investigators were called to the hospital about an unresponsive child who suffered severe burn injuries and a fractured femur.
The investigation revealed on Thursday, the night before Hope was admitted to the hospital, her father submerged her in scalding water as punishment for soiling her pants. The child's mother admitted to being present and aware of the situation.
Four year old Hope Fields was on life support for two days, but did not survive. She died in the hospital on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 11:18am. Sheriff Leon Lott held a press conference Friday, February 23, 2024.
The suspect couple is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Three other children, ranging in age from 5 months to 10 years old, who lived in the home have been placed in emergency protective custody.
