This week, we’re looking at summer health and safety advice from Prisma physicians, with a look today at how to keep safe when you go swimming.
When you think about swimming in the summer, you most likely will think of pools at a hotel or maybe even in your backyard.
Prisma Primary Care Physician Dr. Jeremy Byrd offers tips in staying safe when using and storing pool chemicals.
"Pool chemicals can be dangerous, and so the best thing is just as if you would treat any chemical at home is prevention, keeping it out of reach -- if we're talking about kids in particular or animals," Byrd said. "The thing that I like to talk about when we're talking about the pools is just making sure that your pool is appropriately chlorinated so that you can be safe from illnesses and such that can be transmitted through water."

Many people may also enjoy swimming in what Prisma Pediatrician Dr. Kerry Sease refers to as “open water”, which includes things like lakes, rivers or the ocean.
"When you think about open water swimming, you need to be careful to only swim in designated areas," Sease said. "They'll tell you where it's safe to swim, so don't go into places that are not designated for swimming. Just don't do it."
