A member of the Anderson County School Board and former candidate for State Superintendent of Education is out on bond charged with the sexual assault of a minor nearly 50 years ago.
Arrest warrants say Gary Lee Burgess, Vice Chairman of the Anderson County School Board, was booked this past Wednesday on two counts of sexual battery with a child between the age of eleven and fourteen.
The incidents are alleged to have happened in 1976. Burgess had formerly served as the superintendent for Anderson County District 4, and ran for State Education Superintendent in 2022.
