A U.S. Senator has called for an investigation into the marijuana operation ran by the Cherokee Indians in Western North Carolina. Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina asked the U.S. DOJ to look into the operation during a recent Judiciary Committee hearing.
The marijuana business is being operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on tribal land. Tillis say he feels like the operation is "preying on young people". Tillis cited an online app where people can order from the operation.
He also questioned how the tribe is transporting the product from their grow site to the dispensary, citing that they have to use state roads to do so.
A spokesman for the Cherokee tribe says the operation is in full compliance with federal and tribal law. He called the comments from Tillis a "mischaracterization".
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in the hearing that her office would be investigating those concerns.
