Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis joined 106.3 WORD on the Tara Show Friday morning to discuss the Open Carry with Training Act that Governor McMaster signed on Monday.
Some law enforcement officials have expressed concerns regarding the act, but Sheriff Lewis said he would have been more concerned if it hadn't passed.
"This bill is for law abiding citizens, so criminals don't care whether this bill passes or not to be honest," Lewis said. "I think its timing was very crucial in getting that passed if you look at what the far left is trying to do now."
The act makes South Carolina a second amendment sanctuary state and allows those with a concealed weapons permit to openly carry their concealable weapon unless stated otherwise by signage.
The act goes into affect 90 days from when it was signed on Monday.
