The Greenville County Sheriff's Office gave an update, Wednesday morning regarding the training incident last week that left two deputies injured.
Sheriff Hobart Lewis explained that the root cause of the incident was the misidentifying and improper storage of a bag of 12-guage shotgun rounds that a deputy was believed to have taken from a desk.
When testing, they believed the rounds to be blanks when they were actually breaching rounds usually used for things like windows and hollow doors.
A deputy then used the rounds in the training, shooting two deputies who quickly recognized they were bleeding.
Sheriff Lewis praised EMS and first responders for their quick and effective treatment before the two deputies were taken to the hospital.
Both deputies were discharged from the hospital earlier this week and are expected to make a full recovery.
