For those unfamiliar with her or the situation, Brittney Griner is a WNBA and international basketball player. She is currently locked up in Russia after being arrested there about three months ago. Griner allegedly flew into Moscaw and was found with hash oil in her luggage. She could face up to 10 years in a Russian prison for the offense. Russia is reportedly looking to make a prisoner swap for Griner. Russia wants in exchange the release of Viktor Bout, who was sentenced to 25 years for a conspiracy to kill Americans and providing help to a terrorist group. Bout is an international arms dealer, who has been nicknamed "The Merchant Of Death". For many people, Griner has not helped her cause due to stances in the past, that could be viewed as anti-American. During the 2020 WNBA season, she and her Phoenix teammates walked off the court in protest during the national anthem. She told the media afterward " I don't feel that we should play the national anthem during our season. We should take that much of a stand". Griner protested the anthem in a stance against police brutality and the view that the anthem represents institutionalized racism in America.
