South Carolina has a high number of fatal crashes, that's certainly no secret. It seems like everyday in the Upstate we hear about at least one of those tragic incidents. The Palmetto State ranks towards the top in the nation in fatal crashes per capita. What we don't know is how many of these fatal crashes are caused by distracted driving? I would venture to guess that quite a few area. South Carolina is also one of the most lenient states in terms of the penalty for distracted driving. Typically, the fine for the first offense of distracted driving is $25 dollars. It makes me wonder if that penalty were increased would it maybe discourage people from doing it and in turn lower the amount of fatal crashes? What do you think? Should there be stiffer penalties in South Carolina for distracted driving?
