On May 17, 2021, officers from the Spartanburg Police Department received information about a possible telephone scam.

Citizens reported the scammer contacted them by telephone and stated he was an investigator with the Spartanburg Police Department.


On May 17, 2021, around 1:30 p.m., officers from the Spartanburg Police Department received information from several citizens about a possible telephone scam. They reported the scammer attempted to defraud them of monies by pretending to be an investigator with the Spartanburg Police Department.

The scammer told them his name was Investigator Steadman. The scammer advised citizens that a warrant had been issued for their arrest, and to avoid being arrested they needed to pay a sum of money. According to citizens the scammer’s phone number appeared on their caller ID as a number from the Spartanburg Police Department.

The Spartanburg Police Department will never attempt to collect fines over the telephone. Also, no governmental agency or legitimate business will request an individual to settle a financial obligation using gift cards. Please do not become a victim.

Citizens should never give personal information over the telephone, to include social security numbers, a date of birth, an ID number, or credit card information.
