National Weather Service specialists are carrying out on-site inspections Thursday to confirm whether Wednesday night's storm damage was caused by a tornado.

A tornado warning was previously posted for an area of Pickens County shortly before 9:30, when reports of a suspected twister began coming in.

County Emergency Management says a dozen homes were damaged, and several people rescued from a house on Lost Valley road were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

Damage to as many as six of the houses is described as "major", and two mobile homes were overturned in the area from Crystal Lane to Reece Mill Road.

An Abbeville County resident posted a social media video of a funnel cloud spotted earlier in the evening, but it's not clear whether it was on the ground at the time.
