In its first abortion-related case since Roe-v-Wade, the Supreme Court will consider South Carolina's move to cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood.

The court's decision to hear the state's appeal of a lower-court ruling focuses on whether state and federally-funded Medicaid patients can sue over their right to choose their own provider.

Planned Parenthood lawyers had urged the court not to take up the case aruing its clinics in Charleston and Columbia provide birth control, cancer screenings and STD testing as well as abortions.

South Carolina law bans abortion when cardiac activity is detected, with some exceptions. The legislature cut off funding to Planned Parenthood in 2018, Governor McMaster saying any public money sent there “results in the subsidy of abortion.”  The case will be argued in the spring.
