The countdown is underway to the 72-hour South Carolina Sales Tax Holiday weekend. It starts at 12AM Friday and runs through Sunday. State revenue officials say the South Carolina Sales Tax Holiday has saved families between two and three million dollars a year since it was originally conceived in 2000.
The concept was formed to boost local business and offer some budget relief for households facing back to-school expenses. The State Director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses says, this Sales Tax Holiday weekend is a chance for shoppers to support businesses reeling from the one-two punch of pandemic and supply chain problems.
Ben Homeyer says, "Main Street got through the pandemic only to run smack into labor and supply chain issues and the worst inflation we’ve seen in decades.” However, online purchases also qualify for the exemption from the six percent sales tax as long as items are on the eligibility list.
