As part of National Trauma Month, The Blood Connection is emphasizing the need for blood donations in the Greenville area.

Blood Connection Strategic Partnerships and Programs Manager Allie Van Dyke explained that, while blood supply is not critical at the moment, emergency situations can skyrocket that need without warning.

“Right now, we are not in a critical-need situation, but the problem is that can change literally tomorrow,” Van Dyke said. “If a hospital needs, say 100 units of blood to save a patient, which has happened multiple times this past year, that can wipe out a blood supply for a hospital. And that means they need more instantly to have enough for the patients that are coming that day and the next day. What we need is a stable blood supply.”

She explained that what is most needed are consistent blood doners, as blood donations have a limited shelf life that must be regularly restocked.

MedTrans Medical Director Dr. Sarah Fabiano said that 352 units of blood has been used in the last 14 months by LifeFlight and MedTrans Greenville alone.
