Two former officers at an Upstate jail have now been fired and criminally charged after allegedly assaulting an inmate. SLED has announced the arrests of two former Laurens County Detention Officers. 31 year old, Steven Chad Wix of Whitmire and 43 year old, Randall James Sammons are both charged with 3rd degree Assault and Misconduct In Office.
SLED was called into investigate the incident by Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds, who immediately fired the two officers. The arrest warrants say, Wix punched the inmate repeatedly and Sammons used an electrified glove to shock the inmate multiple times. Warrants also state that the incident was caught on body cam footage.
Sheriff Reynolds said in a statement " As Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Laurens County, I am ultimately responsible for actions of my employees and I do not take that lightly. Therefore, when my employees engage in activities that are criminal, unprofessional or reflect poorly on my office, accountability measures are taken."
