Greenville Police say, they had broken off the chase of a stolen car moments before it crashed Thursday night, killing two people and leaving a third in critical condition.
The officers' report says a fourth person, officially a suspect, might've survived and managed to get away. The car was spotted on Old Piedmont Road just before 10:00 PM and sped away when police tried to pull it over.
Officers say they had called off the pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle as it approached Grove Road. The fugitive driver apparently lost control at the intersection, hit a concrete pillar, three utility poles and ran through a chain link fence.
Reports from the scene say the car had been practically cut in half. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, the other shortly after reaching the hospital.
A forensic autopsy is scheduled on both of them today. The Highway Patrol is now in charge of the investigation.
