The Union County Sheriff says middle school students could end up doing time in juvenile jail for fighting on school grounds. School officials say the warning is in response to as much as a 25-percent increase in the number of fights during the first semester on the campus of Union County Middle School.
District administrator Eric Chiders says suspension penalties for fighting will increase to the same five days imposed on high school students. He also says the new rules will lower the bar on reporting incidents to School Resource Officers for possible charges. Sheriff Jeff Bailey says students charged with assault would face trial in family court.
