Howard is an HBCU, which stands for Historically Black College And Universities. Following an investigation by school officials, a group of four Presbyterian students were expelled for their involvement. Other students were punished for their role, as two students were put on probation at the school and another was given a one year suspension from the college.

School officials say they interviewed well over 2 dozen witnesses in their investigation. They also have permanently removed the Pi Kappi Phi Fraternity from campus, the school says some of the students involved in the incident were members of that fraternity.

The college released a public statement on the issue condemning the racist behavior, saying it has no place in civilized society.
