The Oconee County Council is set to meet Tuesday night and decide the fate of Flock Cameras. The Council is set to vote on a third and final reading of an ordinance that would ban mass surveillance camera systems in the county. The proposal would prohibit county tax dollars or other resources to be used to support the camera systems.
The Council's first two readings of the ordinance passed 4-1 with District 1 councilman John Elliott being the only one in support of keeping Flock cameras in the county. The ordinance also calls for limiting funds to towns like Seneca, Westminster and others who keep the Flock system in usage.
Council Chairman Matthew Durham has spearheaded the movement to ban Flock Cameras in Oconee County, as he say they violate the Constitution.
Law enforcement officials have spoken in support of the Flock system, citing at least one case in which the system helped solve cases faster than traditional methods.
