A Greenville man is going to prison on federal weapons charges after being found with a gun during an Upstate traffic stop. The U.S. DOJ says, 31 year old Khalil Deshawn Gilliam has been convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun. The charges came after the Greenville Police Department conducted a traffic stop near South Pleasantburg Drive in the summer of 2024.
Gilliam was identified as the driver after police say he initially gave them a false identity. It was determined that he had a suspended drivers license. While being arrested for those charges, a search of the vehicle uncovered fentanyl, prescription pills and a loaded pistol with an extended clip.
Gilliam already had four previous conviction for weapons violations. He's been sentenced to 7 years in federal prison. There is no parole or early release in the federal system. The case fell under federal prosecution as part of the national Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative to combat violent crime.
