A major healthcare system in the Upstate is set to pay out millions in a settlement after being accused of causing false claims to Medicare and Tricare. The U.S. Department of Justice, reports that the agreement has come after claims against the Bon Secours-St. Francis Health System.

The settlement comes after allegations that the healthcare system violated federal regulations, including the False Claims Act and the Anti-kickback statute.

The DOJ says, Bon Secours tied compensation for Piedmont Orthopedic Associates to the value of referrals to St. Francis and bonus payments made to the practice violated federal law.

The over 36 million dollar payout will resolve litigation brought on by a whistleblower, who stands to receive over 10 million in the settlement.
