An Upstate native, who has been serving as a teacher and coach at a Midlands high school, is facing charges for a sex crime.
57 year old, Roderick Peter Calhoun Jr. of Simpsonville is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student at Lakewood High School in Sumter. Calhoun , who served as a teacher and coach at the school was arrested, Friday and is charged with sexual battery.
The Sumter Police Department says, the victim is an 18 year old student at the school and the relationship appeared to be consensual. However, Calhoun being a teacher there led to the charges.
The investigation began in early May, after a reported indecent exposure incident involving Calhoun and the student. Investigators say, that encounters between the two happened off of school grounds.
At the time of this report, Calhoun was being held in the Sumter County Detention Center. The Sumter School District has not made any announcements regarding his employment.
Prior to his time at Lakewood, Calhoun spent a decade working for the Greenville County School District, before finishing up with them in 2019.
