Upstate man dead after shootout with SC Highway Patrol

The law enforcement involved shooting of an Upstate man is under investigation in Pickens County. Authorities say, The South Carolina Highway Patrol had tried to stop the suspect for speeding and he pulled into a rural driveway and he started shooting Tuesday night.

The troopers returned fire. The coroner was called to the location on Pace Bridge Road in the Pumpkintown Community shortly after 10:00 PM. The Pickens County Coroner's Office 36-year-old Brian Dustin Shumway of Marietta, dead at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, but no further information is being released at this point. SLED is in charge of the investigation, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.
