Highway Patrol investigators say a collision claimed the life of an Anderson County man Sunday night. The crash was caused by a driver running from an Abbeville County Sheriff's Deputy.

72 year old, Joseph Francis Gardner of Iva , was a passenger in the vehicle rear-ended by the fugitive's car on Highway 81 just over the Anderson County line. Gardner was airlifted to Prisma Health in Greenville about 11:00 p.m.
The coroner says he died of his injuries shortly before 5 AM Monday. No details have been released yet on the suspect's identity, nor why he was being chased.
